Despite being one of the world's most valuable bronze collections, it has rarely taken center stage. But that's about to change: a special exhibition at the Liechtenstein Garden Palace in Vienna, starting on 1 March 2023, will showcase the bronze sculptures of the Princely Collections.
Prince Karl I was one of the first members of the Princely Family to become an art collector. At the beginning of the 17th century, he was a "palatine" to Emperor Rudolf II at the government's seat in Prague. One of his responsibilities in this capacity was the imperial art collections, and he commissioned famous artists to create sculptures for this, as well as for his own collection.
Prince Eusebius I of Liechtenstein, the son of Karl I, also became an art collector. And in a treatise, he instructed his own son to do the same. In fact, almost all of the princes of Liechtenstein went on to acquire important bronzes, most of which are now in the Princely Collections.
In addition to sculptures, the exhibit also features bronze reliefs and furniture decorated with bronze. For example, the Badminton Cabinet, which is crowned by gilt bronze appliques representing the four seasons.
